Introduction

This topic describes the evolution of timber framed buildings and explains some of the dilemmas in their repair and conservation. The first section examines the history and development of timber framing and includes 'pages' on materials, timber conversion, framing techniques, jointing, geographical characteristics and chronological change. The second section considers styles, details and room layouts. The third section explains the main causes of failure, the principles of conservation and identifies some of the options for repair. The repairs 'pages' include information on timber, steel and resin repairs.
